The Hen House is my personal invention to travel with a bicycle. As a professional triathlete I travel with a bicycle anywhere from 10-16 times each year. I also do most of my travel on United Airlines and if I was to pay for my bicycle to travel ($175 each way) on the plane in a regular bike box, just 10 round trip charges would total $3500. I knew there must be a better system. I developed the Hen House to fit within the 62 linear inch requirement. The weight is minimal, the packing is snug and to this date I have never had a part of my bicycle damaged.
The bags will both fit on the conveyor belt and will come out with regular checked luggage. Since the bags require no additional handling and are reasonably sized, I have never been charged excess luggage fees.
The larger bag is roughly a parallelogram and is sized to be 30" on the ground, 24" high, and 8" thick so a total of 62 linear inches. The larger bag holds the complete bicycle frame, handlebars (aerobars), fork (removed from head tube), crank, pedals, seat post and saddle, and some small accessories. The bag will accommodate most normal size bikes (XS-L), but will not fit many bikes with an integrated seat post, or excessively large frame sizes.
The wheel bag is designed for travel and includes room for two complete wheels, skewers, tires, spare tubes, and small accessories. Each bag is padded with foam and includes tensions/compression straps to insure a snug fit.
While I cannot guarantee you will not pay excess airline luggage fees with these bags, I will admit I have been traveling with this luggage for 2 years and have never paid excess luggage fees (I have paid standard first and second bag fees). I have traveled on United, US Air, Continental, and American Airlines with no excessive fees. I developed this bag for my personal use a couple of years ago and was urged to start manufacturing the bags on request of several friends looking for a more affordable way to travel with a bike. While the mechanical skills are more advanced to pack this bag, the payoff is rapid, travel on United Airlines ($175 for a bike each way) just twice and you save $155 (excluding regular luggage fees).
